Mahsuri Festival 2024: A 18-Day Celebration of Malaysia’s Rich Heritage and Culture

Kota Mahsuri Management (Langkawi) Sdn Bhd is proud to announce the inaugural Mahsuri Festival 2024, a premier cultural event that will take place from 4 to 22 December 2024 at Kompleks Kota Mahsuri, Langkawi. The record-breaking, 18-day festival will showcase Malaysia’s rich heritage, arts, and traditions, bringing together diverse communities, cultures, and creative talents in celebration of Hari Mahsuri.

The Mahsuri Festival aims to foster cultural exchange, collaboration, and growth, positioning Langkawi as a leading destination for world-class cultural experiences. The festival will provide a platform for visitors to engage with Malaysia's vibrant traditions while encouraging the creative spirit of local and international talents.

Featuring seven key components, the festival will highlight forums, traditional games, exhibitions, workshops, heritage showcases, cultural performances, and a grand musical theatre production.

Gema Wangsa Mahsuri: The centrepiece of the festival is a spectacular Malay Orchestra Theatrical production. Artistic Direction by Ku Anniq, Consultant and advisory by Award-Winning Director theatre/ flim YBhg Datuk Zahim AlBakri, with a full orchestra led by Y.M. Ku Zahir bin Ku Ahmad (formerly from Istana Budaya), this production will bring the legendary story of Mahsuri to life, featuring a talented troupe of performers.

A Platform for Cultural Exchange: By fostering collaborations between local and international participants, the festival aims to empower the arts, heritage, and culture sectors while educating newcomers to theatre and the performing arts.

The Mahsuri Festival has been in the planning stages since 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with great anticipation, the festival is now set to debut in December 2024, creating an immersive celebration of Malaysia’s cultural heritage.

This event is a celebration of unity through diversity, and we believe it will leave a lasting impact on visitors by showcasing the best of Malaysia’s cultural traditions," says Mahsuri Festival Executive Producer, Y.M. The festival is expected to attract both local and international visitors, with a series of events designed to captivate audiences of all ages. The festival’s cultural and heritage showcases are intended to inspire, educate, and celebrate Malaysia’s diverse traditions, as well as foster tourism growth in Langkawi by
offering exciting tourism packages for visitors.

ASWARA BRINGS THIRD MySPaR INTERNATIONAL TO LANGKAWI THIS DECEMBER

The National Academy of Arts, Culture, and Heritage (ASWARA) is bringing its biennial My Symposium on Practice as Research (MySPaR) International beyond its home in the Klang Valley to the enchanting island of Langkawi.

Scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 December 2024, this third edition of MySPaR will be held at Wings by Croske Resort and Balai Seni Negara Langkawi, setting to attract approximately 150 local and international participants for an inspiring exchange of ideas and artistic practices. 

Themed “Artistic Processes: From Concept to Creation”, MySPaR 2024 will delve into three contemporary topics: Digital Art and New Media, Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Art, and Art and Social Engagement.

MySPaR International 2024 Programme Director Dr. Wong Oi Min shares her enthusiasm about the upcoming symposium: “MySPaR highlights the transformative power of tacit knowledge through our dynamic Oration presentations.”

“These sessions uniquely engage audiences as speakers incorporate tools, instruments, and expressive gestures to creatively communicate their insights,” she adds. 

She continues, “With the stunning backdrop of a unique resort, the symposium will feature Mobile Artistic Presentations, guiding participants through scenic locations in an immersive journey. This creative approach seamlessly blends art and research, making for an engaging and unforgettable knowledge-sharing experience.”

Dr. Wong, who also serves as the Director of the Centre for Artistic Research, Excellence, and Scholarship (CARES) at ASWARA, emphasises the importance of creating an experience that merges creativity, research, and culture.
The programme features an exciting line-up of keynote speakers, including Associate Professor Shei-Chau Wang from the School of Art and Design, Northern Illinois University, and ProfessorTs. Dr. Khairul Azril Ismail, Deputy Rector of ASWARA.

Complementing the academic dialogue are esteemed guest artists, including award-winning actor/director Dato’ Zahim Albakri, and Lau Beh Chin, a talented choreographer and artistic director of JinnD Productions. These industry luminaries will share their expertise and creative journeys to inspire the next generation of practitioners.

MySPaR International 2024 will be conducted in both Malay and English to reflect ASWARA’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

The event will feature keynote speeches, workshops, panel discussions, orations, and a half-day excursion to Langkawi’s renowned tourist attractions like Kota Mahsuri, Kraftangan Malaysia, and Underwater Sculpture at Pulau Pasir, blending cultural discovery with academic enrichment.

This year’s event is aligned with global initiatives such as the UNESCO Road Map for Arts Education and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing ASWARA’s commitment to fostering sustainable cultural and artistic education.

Since its inception in 2018, MySPaR has become a signature event by ASWARA, focusing on practice-based research methodologies in the arts.

Evolving into an international platform by 2022, the symposium has positioned itself as a vital meeting ground for researchers, practitioners, and academics seeking to merge theoretical research with creative practice.

#CNY Day 5 (Horse Year 2014) After me and my cousins had our breakfast at 忠记兵如港口大树头炸料粉   we continue our day trip to Kwan Yin Tong Cave Temple,just a 15 minute drive from there.... I had a visit before this Kwan Yin Tong Cave Temple(观音洞) ,Ipoh  ,and this was my second visit.. Mahsuri's Tomb & Cultural Center, Langkawi | Malaysia

Mahsuri was a young woman who lived in Langkawi, an island in Kedah, Malaysia, during the late 18th century. According to folklore, she was accused of adultery and executed by stabbing. Her tomb, Makam Mahsuri, has become a tourist attraction on the island. The Story Mahsuri was the daughter of a couple who moved from their native Phuket to the island of Langkawi in search of a better life. She was the most beautiful in all of Langkawi and married the warrior Wan Darus (or Wan Derus). As was required of him, her husband had to go to war with the Siamese, leaving Mahsuri behind to fend for herself. It was during this time that Mahsuri befriended a young traveller named Deraman.
